Kwak-Minjung

Kwak Minjung is a painter and storyteller who discovered healing through art after navigating the challenges of profound hearing loss. With a background in media studies from Sungkyunkwan University and a gold medal in the painting category at the 2024 Korea National Skills Competition for the Disabled, she channels her lived experiences into vibrant, heartfelt paintings.

After publishing a personal essay collection about parenting a child with a hearing disability, Kwak began experimenting with character design and illustration. This led to the publication of her children’s book "The Chameleon’s Friendship Mission." From watercolor to oil on canvas, her works express moments of resilience, longing, and quiet joy—whether it’s a peaceful bench by a river or a field of cherry blossoms bursting with light.

Her painting “Harmonious Society” showcases people of all abilities and backgrounds coexisting, while “Spring”, her award-winning work, captures fleeting seasonal beauty within a limited timeframe.

곽민정 작가는 청각장애를 지닌 삶 속에서 그림을 통해 치유와 성장을 경험한 화가입니다. 성균관대학교 언론정보대학원을 졸업한 후, 2011년 세계장애인기능경기대회 웹마스터 부문 금상 수상을 계기로 대통령경호처에서 근무했으며, 이후 아이의 장애를 겪으며 수필집 『우리는 견디며, 사랑하며』 공동 출판을 하기도 했습니다.

그녀는 ‘카멜레온의 친구 만들기 작전’이라는 그림책을 직접 쓰고 그리며 창작 세계를 확장했고, 2023년과 2024년 장애인 기능대회에서 각각 동메달과 금메달을 수상하며 본격적인 회화 작업으로 영역을 넓혔습니다.

유화 ‘조화로운 사회’는 다양한 장애 유형과 인종, 세대를 아우르는 인물들을 통해 진정한 포용의 메시지를 전하며, ‘봄’은 짧은 시간 안에 표현한 봄날의 빛과 공기의 생동감을 담아내 금상을 수상했습니다.
그녀의 꿈은 더 많은 동화책을 만들고, 언젠가는 자신의 개인전을 여는 것입니다.
