Song-Geunho

Song Geunho is a Korean painter who draws deep aesthetic resonance from nature’s changing seasons. Living with a hearing impairment since childhood, he found in painting a sincere way to express his thoughts and emotions. Rather than focusing on disability, his works invite us into a serene, rural world filled with warmth and peace.

Song’s landscapes, drawn from firsthand experience in farming and deep engagement with nature, do not rely on complex forms or dramatic subject matter. Instead, they are quiet yet powerful renderings of rice paddies, village houses, and riverside scenes, expressing a poetic stillness that distinguishes his work. In his paintings, noise fades and colors speak—soft greens of spring, the robust greens of summer, golden rice fields in autumn, and the pure white stillness of winter snow.

Representing South Korea in the 2003 International Disabled Artists’ Olympics and receiving accolades such as the Prime Minister’s Commendation in 2004, Song has held over 10 solo exhibitions and participated in international shows in Turkey, Mexico, Canada, and more. He continues to reflect on the “truth of nature” and “inner peace” through his art, capturing the emotional essence of familiar yet transformed landscapes.

송근호는 한국의 청각장애 작가로, 농촌의 사계절을 진실하고 따뜻한 시선으로 담아내는 풍경화가입니다. 유년기부터 들리지 않는 세상 속에서 자란 그는, 말을 대신해 감정을 전할 수 있는 통로로서 그림을 선택했습니다. 그에게 예술은 고요함 속에 숨어 있는 자연의 진실을 발견하는 일이었고, 그것은 30여 년간 변함없는 창작의 원천이었습니다.

그의 그림에는 논밭, 시골집, 산, 강 등 한국인의 마음속 고향이 담겨 있습니다. 형체보다는 색채에 집중하는 송 작가의 작품은, 실제 사물의 묘사보다는 전체 풍경의 정서와 고요함을 전하는 데 집중합니다. 그 안에는 풍경을 바라보는 따뜻한 시선과, 들리지 않기에 더욱 깊어진 감각이 녹아 있습니다.

그의 대표작들은 연두빛 새싹, 무성한 여름의 녹음, 황금빛 들녘, 하얀 눈송이 같은 사계절의 생명력을 고스란히 담고 있으며, 관람자에게 잊고 있던 고향의 풍경과 정서를 떠올리게 합니다. 대상의 왜곡보다는 충실한 재현, 그리고 그 위에 깃든 정적과 고요함은 송근호 작가만의 미적 언어입니다.

그는 2003년 국제장애인올림픽에서 유화 국가대표로 선발되어 종합우승에 기여했으며, 이후 청와대 초청, 국무총리 표창을 비롯해 다수의 상을 수상했습니다. 개인전 10회를 비롯해 아시아, 북미, 유럽 등지에서 해외 단체전에 참여했으며, 현재도 자연에 대한 묵상과 미적 사유를 이어가고 있습니다.
