Heo Namseong 허남성: A First Exhibition, and a Message of Hope

In April 2015, artist Heo Namseong held his first solo exhibition titled “Hope” at Banana Long Gallery in Busan. Deaf and mute since birth, Heo spent years painting in silence—his works quietly exploring themes of love, presence, and resilience.

The exhibition came about unexpectedly, during a visit to his wife’s hometown. Despite having won awards in several national art competitions, Heo had never thought a solo show would be possible. Through portraits, landscapes, and abstract pieces, he delivered one message: that expression transcends sound, and courage can be drawn even in silence.

2015년 4월, 화가 허남성은 부산 바나나롱갤러리에서 첫 개인전 ‘희망’을 개최했다. 청각과 언어장애로 인해 말과 소리 없이 살아온 그는, 그림을 통해 세상과 연결되는 길을 열었다. 이 전시는 아내의 고향인 부산을 방문했다가 우연히 성사된 전시였으며, 오랜 시간 미술대전에서 실력을 인정받았음에도 개인전을 한 번도 열지 못했던 그에게는 특별한 시작이었다.

허 작가의 그림은 인물, 풍경, 추상 등 다양한 장르를 아우르며, 그 안에는 사랑, 존재, 시간, 관계 등 삶의 조각들이 고요히 담겨 있다. 그는 “나처럼 듣지도 말하지도 못하는 사람도 전시회를 열 수 있다”며 누군가에게 작은 희망이 되었으면 한다고 전했다.
