Kim Hwanjoo 김환주: Overcoming Silence, Painting Life

In July 2018, Kim Hwanjoo presented her eighth solo exhibition at Art Center Gallery Bongbong. The show featured 21 oil paintings including Rhythm of Life, Roses and Wine, and Fragrance in Time. Her works combine hyperrealistic still life and romantic landscapes with subtle emotion and symbolism.

Deaf since infancy, Kim found her voice through painting. She studied Western art in Korea and Russia, and draws inspiration from her meeting with Kim Ki-chang (Unbo), a renowned Deaf Korean painter. Her goal is to share warmth, life, and inner strength with others through art.

2018년 7월, 김환주 작가의 초대 개인전이 아트센터 갤러리봉봉에서 개최되었다. 전시에서는 ‘생명–리듬’, ‘장미와 와인’ 등 총 21점의 작품이 소개되었으며, 작가는 “정지된 공간 속에 영원히 살아 있는 장미”를 통해 생명의 아름다움을 표현하고자 했다.

생후 2개월 무렵 청력을 잃은 그는 예술을 통해 침묵의 한계를 넘어섰고, 동국대와 대구대 대학원을 거쳐 러시아 레핀 국립미술대에서 수학하며 화가로서의 정체성을 다져왔다. 운보 김기창 화백과의 만남은 작가에게 큰 영감을 주었고, “비장애인보다 더 열심히 살아야 한다”는 말을 가슴에 새기며 활동을 이어오고 있다.
