Kim Kyosaeng is a veteran artist and skilled screen hand-painter who has overcome adversity with quiet resilience. Born in 1954 and deafened at the age of three, he launched his career in 1987 with the painting Harbor. In 2002, he won first place in screen hand-painting at the National Skills Competition for the Disabled—an achievement that placed him among the few experts in the field nationwide.

His story reflects a powerful balance between hardship and hope. Working as a university staff member, artist, and educator, Kim has earned over 38 awards, including a Grand Prize at the Korea Disabled Art Exhibition and multiple gold medals in skill competitions. His artistic process—sketching ideas after work, capturing moments with a camera—reflects a lifetime of disciplined creativity.

His dream: to open a personal gallery to house the works of his lifetime and continue supporting the next generation of artists with disabilities.

김교생 작가는 ‘항구’라는 작품으로 1987년 화단에 데뷔한 이후, 서양화와 스크린 핸드페인팅 분야를 넘나들며 활발히 활동해온 중견 예술인입니다. 세 살 때 홍역으로 청각을 잃었지만, “장애는 제약이 아닌 도전”이라는 자세로 수십 년간 예술과 기능에서 꾸준한 성과를 이뤄냈습니다.

2002년 전국장애인기능경기대회에서 스크린 핸드페인팅 1위를 수상하며 해당 분야 전문가로 자리매김했고, 대한민국장애인미술대전 대상, 이탈리아 국제공모전 준대상 등 국내외에서 수상 경력을 쌓아왔습니다.

매일 퇴근 후 2~3시간씩 그림 구상에 몰두하고, 주말에는 작업에 매진하는 삶. 공예, 광고미술, 회화 등 장르를 넘나드는 다채로운 이력 속에서도, 김 작가는 늘 “장애도 예술이 된다”는 믿음으로 세상과 자신을 연결해왔습니다.

그는 언젠가 자신의 작품을 모아 개인 갤러리를 열고, 더 많은 장애예술인들의 성장에 도움이 되고 싶다는 소망을 밝혔습니다.
