Kim Taegyun is an artist with two windows onto the world—one through painting in color, and the other through photography in light. He has long traversed both mediums, quietly capturing emotions, memories, and human presence in everyday life.
His photograph Big Smile portrays a disabled artist beaming in front of their self-portrait. In this moment, the subject, their painted self, and the artist behind the lens form a quiet resonance—a scene where reality and representation gently converge. The work was awarded First Prize in a 2015 national competition hosted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled, offering a sincere glimpse into joy and artistic empathy through the medium of photography.
Kim first gained attention for his painting skills as a student, and studied photography in high school before pursuing Western painting at Dongguk University. He made his debut in the Korean art scene in 1994 with a Special Selection at the National Art Exhibition (Gukjeon), and in 2008, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Jeongsu Grand Art Exhibition for his painting Leisure Time, receiving the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award.

Beyond his artistic practice, Kim is deeply engaged in community work—teaching photography and offering free portrait services to seniors. Through these acts of quiet service, he continues to live his art, not just as an image on canvas or film, but as a way of being in the world.
김태균 작가는 두 가지 시선을 가진 예술가다. 하나는 색으로 그리는 회화이고, 다른 하나는 빛으로 기록하는 사진이다.그는 오래전부터 이 두 장르를 넘나들며, 일상 속 감정과 사람들의 순간을 고요하게 포착해왔다.
그의 사진 ‘함박웃음’은 자화상 앞에서 웃고 있는 장애인 화가의 모습을 포착한 작품으로,작가와 배우는 사람, 현실과 그림 속 모습이 조용한 공명을 이루는 장면이다. 이 작품은 2015년 고용노동부·장애인고용공단 주관 공모전에서 최우수작으로 선정되며,사진을 통해 진심 어린 웃음과 예술적 공감이 어떻게 기록되는지를 보여주었다.
김태균 작가는 학생 시절부터 회화에 두각을 나타냈고, 고등학교에서는 사진을, 이후 동국대 서양화과에서는 회화를 전공하며 본격적인 창작활동을 시작했다.1994년 국전(대한민국미술전람회) 특선으로 화단에 데뷔한 그는,2008년에는 ‘자유시간’으로 대한민국 정수대전 대상을 수상하며 문화체육관광부 장관상을 받기도 했다.

작가는 예술 활동 외에도 사진 교육, 무료 영정사진 촬영 등 다양한 사회 공헌 활동을 이어가며,예술을 삶 속에서 실천하는 길을 조용히 걸어가고 있다.
