Kim Yoonhwan 김윤환 : Solo Exhibition 2023

Artist Kim Yoonhwan reinterprets the Ilwol Obongdo—a traditional Korean folding screen that stood behind the king’s throne during the Joseon Dynasty—through contemporary painting. His work weaves tradition, inner philosophy, and color into a visual meditation on history and emotion.

In his solo exhibition Gung: Awakened by Color, held at Gallery Gaon in Goyang in July 2023, Kim explored the palace (gung) not merely as a physical site, but as a source of spiritual richness, historical comfort, and sensory awakening.

The featured series Gung: Sun and Moon transforms the Ilwol Obongdo into a luminous field: the sun and moon rendered in bold color, while mountains and pine trees emerge through refined lines and planes. In this coexistence of day and night, Kim creates a quiet intensity that holds both meditative stillness and dynamic presence.

To the artist, the palace is “a place of origin in the mind—a beginning point as an artist, and a place of rest in a world of unrelenting demands.”

작가 김윤환은 조선시대 궁궐의 상징인 일월오봉도를 현대회화로 재해석하며, 전통과 내면의 철학을 빛과 색으로 풀어내는 작업을 이어가고 있다.

지난 2023년 7월, 일산 동구청 갤러리 가온에서 열린 개인전 〈궁, 색으로 깨어나다〉 에서 그는 “궁”이 주는 정신적 풍요, 역사적 위안, 그리고 감각적 환기를 화폭에 담아냈다.

전시 대표작인 〈궁, 해와 달〉 시리즈는 왕의 어좌 뒤편에 놓이던 일월오봉도에서 해와 달은 색으로, 산과 소나무는 선과 면으로 표현되며, 낮과 밤이 공존하는 화면 속에 정적인 명상성과 생동하는 감각이 함께한다. 작가에게 있어 궁은 “심상의 고향이자 예술가로서의 시작점이며, 치열한 사회 속에서도 마음이 쉬어가는 안식처”다.
