Bang-Dooyoung

Bang Dooyung is a renowned Korean painter and a pivotal figure in the history of disabled art in Korea. Born in 1947, his journey as an artist was shaped by early-onset hearing loss and a deep introspection on life and death. After surviving a life-altering medical condition in his youth, Bang redirected his creative energy from literature to visual arts.

He officially debuted as an artist in 1981 and went on to found the Korea Disabled Artists Association (KDAP) in 1995, establishing one of the most significant support networks for artists with disabilities. His art, rooted in the Korean emotion of “Han,” explores the coexistence of suffering and transcendence, often inspired by the flow of rivers and the cycle of nature.

Bang has held 16 solo exhibitions—including in the U.S. and Canada—and participated in over 400 group exhibitions worldwide. He was the first Korean artist to receive a supporting membership from the Canadian Art Association and was selected as a cover artist for the U.S.-based Vergil America in 2012. His work is both deeply personal and universally resonant, contributing to global recognition of Korean contemporary art through an Eastern metaphysical lens.

방두영은 한국장애인미술의 초석을 다진 화가로, 1995년 (사)한국장애인미술협회를 창립하며 장애예술인들의 전시 기회와 권익을 위해 헌신해온 작가입니다. 1947년 충청북도 단강리에서 태어나 서울로 이주한 후, 중이염 수술로 인해 청각을 잃고 ‘침묵의 삶’ 속에서 미술로 자신의 길을 열었습니다.

17세에 본격적으로 미술 공부를 시작한 그는 문학적 감수성과 철학적 사유를 바탕으로, 삶과 죽음의 경계, 탄생과 소멸의 의미, 한국인의 정서인 ‘한(恨)’을 화면 위에 담아내는 작업을 지속해왔습니다.

1981년 세종문화회관에서 열린 “아시아 6개국 초대전”을 시작으로 미국, 프랑스, 캐나다, 일본 등지에서 왕성한 활동을 펼쳤으며, 16회의 개인전과 400여 회의 기획전 및 그룹전에 참여했습니다. 그는 대한민국장애인미술대전 특별상, 한국문화예술공로상, 대통령상(2017 한국장애인문화예술대상) 등 다수의 수상 경력을 보유하고 있습니다.

“삶과 죽음은 둘이 아닌 하나였다”는 자각 이후, 그의 작품은 구상의 형태를 벗어나 무와 생명, 동양적 은유를 품은 독특한 시각언어로 변모했습니다. 현재까지도 그의 작업은 이어지고 있으며, 향후에는 기념 전시관을 통해 대표작을 아카이빙하고 사회에 환원할 계획을 가지고 있습니다.
