Choi-Ilkwon

Choi Ilkwon is a Korean painter who has devoted over four decades to preserving and evolving the tradition of Korean painting. As the final disciple of Unbo Kim Ki-chang and a student of Simwon Cho Jung-hyun, he has continued the legacy of Korea’s finest ink and color painting techniques while developing his own voice rooted in nature, discipline, and sincerity.

His works, centered on flowers and birds, depict Korea’s native species with precision and calm, often translating the innocence of children’s drawings into simplified forms and color fields. Nature is not merely a subject in his art—it is a spiritual anchor and a reflection of life’s rhythm.

Rather than relying on the label of disability, Choi has consistently pursued recognition based solely on the merit of his work. He believes that art should be evaluated by its depth and sincerity, not by who creates it. This belief has driven his decades-long efforts to support and mentor young artists, including youth with disabilities.

In addition to over 10 solo exhibitions, including his first in 1995 at Gallery Seoul, he has shown in national and international group shows and received numerous accolades, such as the Presidential Commendation and the Grand Prize at the Korea Disabled Art Awards.

최일권 화가는 한국화의 맥을 이어가는 예술가로, 운보 김기창 화백의 마지막 제자이자 심원 조중현 화백에게 그림을 사사받았다.
화조를 주제로 하는 그의 작품은 섬세하면서도 편안한 분위기를 띠며, 자연의 색을 해석하고 그 안에 담긴 삶의 숨결을 포착한다.

그는 단순히 한국화의 전통을 지키는 데 그치지 않고, ‘베이비 그림’에서 영감을 얻어 조형과 색감을 단순화하는 현대적 시도를 더해가고 있다.
‘다양성이 있어야 개성이 드러난다’는 신념 아래, 매일 새벽까지 작업하며 끊임없이 실험과 창작을 반복한다.

장애를 전면에 내세우지 않고 오히려 미술계의 평가를 통해 자신의 존재를 증명해온 그는, 지금도 미술교육, 장애청소년 지도, 캠프 운영 등 사회적 활동을 병행하며 예술의 가치를 삶 속에서 실천하고 있다.

그는 여전히 이루고 싶은 꿈이 있다. 삶의 기록이 담긴 수많은 작품을 온전히 펼칠 수 있는 자신만의 갤러리 공간을 여는 것이다. 그곳에서 사람들과 예술을 나누며, 끝까지 그림을 그릴 준비를 하고 있다.
