Kim-Gyosaeng

Kim Kyosaeng is a multidisciplinary artist whose journey spans over 30 years across Western painting, craft, and fiber art. Despite living with a profound hearing and speech disability from the age of three, Kim has cultivated a powerful and quiet visual language rooted in persistence and sincerity.

His debut in the Korean art scene began in 1987 with the painting Harbor, and he has since held 7 solo and art fair booth exhibitions, participated in over 300 invited and group shows, and received over 38 awards from major national competitions. Notably, he earned second place at the Cuvio International Deaf Artists Competition in Italy and won the Grand Prize at the Korea Disabled Art Exhibition, later becoming an invited artist by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Kim is also an accomplished practitioner of screen hand-painting, a rare form of textile art in Korea. He received first prize in the category at the 2002 National Skills Competition for the Disabled and has claimed gold in multiple skills areas including woodworking and lacquer. Beyond awards, his deep commitment to art education for fellow disabled artists and community engagement has marked him as a quiet pioneer.

His work balances technical precision with deep emotional warmth, reflecting the tranquility and subtle resonance of the natural and human world. His artistic motto remains: “Disability is not a complaint, but a challenge to overcome through creation.”

김교생 작가는 30년 넘게 서양화, 공예, 섬유예술 분야를 넘나들며 활동해온 다재다능한 작가입니다. 세 살 때 청각을 잃고 중증 청각·언어장애를 지녔지만, 예술을 통해 세상과 소통하며 조용하지만 단단한 작가의 길을 걸어왔습니다.

1987년 작품 ‘항구’로 데뷔한 그는 7회의 개인전 및 부스전과 300여 회의 국내외 초대·단체전에 참여했으며, 대한민국미술대전 2회 입선을 포함해 총 38회의 공모전 수상 경력을 갖고 있습니다. 1998년에는 대한민국장애인미술대전 대상, 이탈리아 쿠비오 청각장애인 국제공모전에서 준대상(2등상)을 수상하며 국제무대에서도 인정받았습니다.

또한 스크린 핸드페인팅(섬유 위 직접 그림을 그리는 예술)의 국내 희소 전문가로, 2002년 전국장애인기능경기대회에서 1위를 차지하며 이름을 알렸습니다. 목공예, 광고미술 등 다양한 분야에서 수상하며 기능과 예술을 넘나드는 독보적 이력을 자랑합니다.

장애청소년 미술지도, 봉사활동, 작품 판매 수익의 기부 등 예술 너머의 실천을 이어온 그는 “장애는 불만이 아닌, 극복과 창작의 대상”이라는 태도로 진정한 예술가의 면모를 보여주고 있습니다.
